Jobs for Felons?
When searching for jobs for felons and confused with how to get a job with a criminal record, there’s no one better to ask than Cheri Garcia. Having been to jail 11 times for drug-related offenses she completely turned her life around. Having a record, she still managed to work in TV news and become a successful entrepreneur. She invented and patented the Luminous Envy which sold worldwide and was picked up by both As Seen on TV and Leslie’s Pool. Cheri is also the CEO of an app, RentEval, which received $500K in funding and does PR for Mark Cuban Companies.
She has a passion for sharing her success with others that are struggling to find jobs for felons through Cornbread Hustle. Here you can see her on The Steve Harvey Show sharing how she helps felons find their success on a regular basis.
So What Does Cheri Garcia Share with Her Students?
I had the opportunity to have Cheri guest appear on my YouTube channel to share with my audience how she helps her students find jobs for felons. The video will be posted below, but for now, I will bullet point some of the key insight I gathered.
- Networking – Cheri starts off by stating, “I don’t care what your ethnicity or background is, the one thing you can do today is start making relationships.” She then brings up that most people don’t care about your past, as a matter of fact, some people are advocates for giving felons a second chance. With social media it’s far easier to network with individuals now than it was in the past, building this network of successful individuals will open doors of opportunity.
- Brainstorm – Don’t settle because you have a red X on your back, ask yourself “what’s my dream job?” and write it down. Then you need to ask yourself, “Who would pay for this kind of work?” Then go on to network with these people. While this may seem “too simple” complicating a process is often times to avoid taking action.
- Intrapreneurism – Being an intrapreneur is working within the job that you eventually want to own a business which provides the same or similar products and/or services. Getting an entry level job within what you’re passionate about will allow you to get hands on learning and an inside look in the industry you want to be in. You don’t need a college degree to work as an intern. You can be an intrapreneur by calling up a place within the industry you’re passionate about, let them know your skills, and that you will work for free.
All this can be summarized as BE PROACTIVE AND BELIEVE IN YOURSELF!
